Varda: Faces Places (Visages Villages)
Short url:
Last month, the film world lost a giant with the passing of Agnès Varda. With a career spanning seven decades and dozens of features, shorts, and documentaries, Varda produced a vast body of work that influenced and evolved with the cinematic art form. Our program highlights just a handful of films, from her trailblazing days as a key figure in the French New Wave to her introspective late career documentaries. Tonight Faces Places (2017), Varda's collaborative documentary with street artist JR.
88-year-old filmmaker Agnès Varda teams up with street artist JR to travel the French countryside. Together they meet everyday people and make large scale portraits for public exhibition on the streets and walls where they live. Over the course of their journey, a friendship develops and Varda looks to her past, while contemplating her own mortality. Directed in collaboration with JR, Varda's penultimate film is a big-hearted and gently moving road movie. The eccentric Varda and her affable companion make an irresistible odd couple, stoking each other's curiosity and creativity. Completed just two years before her passing,Faces Places (Visages Villages) finds Varda returning to her roots as a photographer and looking inward, while never losing keen sight of the world around her.
