Themroc is a must-see cult film which depicts the breakdown of an overly restrictive bourgeois French society into something like paleolithic urbanism, or idealised anarchy. The minimal dialogue in the film is comprised of a language of fantastic grunts. Themroc himself is a blue collar worker living an oppressed existence with a meaningless job. He goes berserk after getting the sack, destroying his apartment and beginning a wave of contagious anarchist behaviour. It was made in clear sympathy with the social upheaval of the era in France. It’s shamelessly utopic, and willfully overlooks the many complexities of such a transition to ‘freedom’, but oh-boy is it a hilarious and riotous ride. It will leave you howling at the moon.
