Free Community Kitchen Delft
Short url:
Food is a right, not a privilege.
Free Community Kitchen Delft provides free, filling, vegan and nutritious meals for all who come. Every Sunday we cook at Gumi Sasak and hand out food to the local community, after which we'll hand out the rest of the food at Bastiaansplein in Delft at around 14:00 These gatherings create opportunities to eat, come together, share information and learn from each other.
Free Community Kitchen Delft shows how grassroots initiatives can spark meaningful change, built on the values of mutual-aid, co-operation and self management. We're always looking for more people to help cook, clean up, and hand out food. If you want to help out with any of these things, even if it's just for an hour or so, please email us at GumiSasak@disroot.org to get in touch, or show up at Bastiaansplein for food from around 14:00 onwards. The food is free, but donations are more than welcome to help us keep the project running.

In The Netherlands, 900,000 people live in poverty, among whom are 221.000 children. 885,000 people in the Netherlands sometimes do not eat enough because they cannot afford it, with 450,000 of them suffering from hidden food insecurity.
Despite “bestaanszekerheid” (the right to livelihood security) being a key issue in recent Dutch elections, it has since vanished from the political debate. The reality is that this right is still far from a guarantee for everyone. Governments—both nationally and globally—continue to neglect their responsibility to ensure basic livelihood security. Rather than providing bestaanszekerheid for all, politicians put the people against each other: the black against the white, the old against the young, the “native” against the newcomer. By distributing free food, we challenge this failure directly. Free Community Kitchen Delft confronts the authorities by proving that it is possible to provide for people's essential needs if ordinary people prioritise care, inclusivity and solidarity rather than fight amongst each other, whilst the politicians and rich people take more power and money for themselves. We draw inspiration from Food not Bombs.
