When this cult classic by David Cronenberg was made there was no such thing as reality TV or cyberspace. What science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick warned us about in the 1960's was brought to the screen in the 1980's by Cronenberg, and became part of our personal lives in the 90s. This film is known for eliciting extreme responses.... from disdain to academic euphoria. One thing is for sure, it's a wild ride.
When Max Renn goes looking for edgy new shows for his sleazy soft-sore cable TV station, he accidentally intercepts a mysterious pirate broadcast (today it would be considered the 'dark web') of a hyperviolent show called "Videodrome" that features the apparent torture and murder of its victims. As he unearths the origins of the program, he embarks on a hallucinatory journey into a shadowy world of right-wing conspiracies, sadomasochistic sex games, and body transformation.... as his ordinary life dissolves around him.
Starring James Woods, and surprisingly Deborah Harry (singer of of the band Blondie) i pops up as Renn's sadomasochistic girlfriend in one of her first film roles. A treatise on how modern technology absorbs us into its web, and morphs us in ways we cannot control or understand.
