This is the iconic film starring James Dean, and directed with a fierce vision by Nicholas Ray. Set in the middle-class suburbs of America in the 50s, this is the classic film about confused, fucked-up, alienated teenagers. James Dean plays Jim Stark, a guy whose family has just moved to a new town, and he faces the hostility of the locals. Dean blazed across the technicolor screens with his red jacket and sharp charisma, an image that became etched in the subconscious of audiences around the world. A very young Dennis Hopper also has a part in the film, and you can see him looking at his hero James Dean with awe.
The film revolves around a game the teenagers play where two guys drive cars at full speed towards a cliff, and the first one to jump out is the coward. Jim Stark is challenged to the duel, and takes it up in order to gain some kind of acceptance. Along the way he meets some other outcasts, and together they try to piece together their senseless lives. Actor James Dean will be dead within a year after this film was made, killed in a high-speed traffic accident. This film is directed by the legendary Nick Ray, a rebel within the Hollywood system (and who would end up leaving the States and come to live in Amsterdam). Also starring Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo who adds a queer angle into the film....
In super wide-screen cinemascope and heart-throbbing technicolor.
