FCA Book Club - King Kong Theory by Virginie Despentes
Short url:
We will next read King Kong Theory, by Virginie Despentes.
Because we wanted the next read to be sex-work related, we did a little open request for recommendations and one of the recommendations was this book by Virginie Despentes.
King Kong Theory is a book by filmmaker and novelist Virginie Despentes, it was first published in French in 2006 by Grasset. English-language editions have been published in 2010 by The Feminist Press (translated by Stéphanie Benson) and in 2020 by Fitzcarraldo Editions (translated by Frank Wynne). The book is a blend of memoir, critical theory, and feminist manifesto. Despentes discusses a number of episodes in her life, including the reaction to the publication of her novel Baise-Moi and its subsequent film adaptation, which she directed; her time as a sex worker in Lyon and Paris; and her experience and subsequent trauma being gang-raped at the age of 17 while hitch-hiking across France. The overarching focus of the book has been described as "the ways in which our experiences of gender, power, and
control are bound up in the vast, multifaceted ideology of late capitalism and our lives are organized around satisfying, or disappointing, male desire." (source: Wikipedia)
We'll meet in NieuwLand on Sunday 14th July at 16:30.
There will be a donation jar and some refreshments available (cash or pin). Please think about donating something if you are able; a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends, who know of the importance of places like this, which exist alternative to an individualistic society, capitalist economy and gentrifying neighbourhoods.
Important: Because we changed the date of the event, this meeting will take place in the upstairs room which is not wheelchair accessible unfortunately. The toilets are also not wheelchair accessible.
If you have access needs regarding the event that you feel may not be in place please get in contact with us so that we can do our best to incorporate these. If you have difficulties getting hold of the text, also reach out to us and we will try to help. You can send an email to feministbookclubamsterdam[@]gmail.com.
Like the FCA more generally we aim to be a harassment free space for everybody. If you are new to our meetings, or feel you need a refresher please read our code of conduct to find out what behaviours we hope for from you, and hold ourselves to in our sessions
(http://www.thefeministclub.nl/coc).
If there are topics or questions you would like to discuss please bring those with you.
We are looking forward to seeing and discussing with you!
