MACON COUNTY LINE 1974 Directed by Richard Compton 89 minutes In English
Here we have a film that created an explosion on the drive-in circuit in America, and went on to become the highest grossing movie of 1974. Today it is practically unknown, especially here in Europe. Back in the 1960s there was an actor who had a terrible role as an idiot called Jethro on a television series called The Beverly Hillbillies. His name was Max Baer, and he broke everyone's minds when he co-wrote, produced and acted in this infamous cult thriller that took the country by storm.
Very few movies are able to switch gears. They start off in a certain genre or mood, and they stick with it religiously. Not so with this flick. The setting is the southern state of Louisiana, and the year is 1954. Two brothers named Chris and Wayne are having a carefree car trip around the the United States before they have to report for active duty in the the army. They are meeting some nice girls, drinking and living it up, cracking jokes... until everything erupts into a southern Gothic nightmare. This film really does feel like the two boys actually cross over the border into another world, where everything suddenly goes wrong. It is a harrowing tale from the deep south, supposedly based on real events.
A revered cult classic exploitation film, and a drive-in legend that after all these years still packs a crazy and unexpected punch.
This will be a high-definition screening
