The Sumac Centre is a volunteer-run social & community space based in Forest Fields, Nottingham, UK.

Established in 2001, the Sumac has been a hub for many people over the years.  Information about our history can be found here.

We currently have a cafe which is open every Saturday evening for a big communal meal we call People’s Kitchen. We also host the Forest Fields Social Club, a bar which opens on Fridays and Saturdays from 7.30pm – 11pm.

The Sumac Youth Club, a regular project for Forest Fields youngsters, is open many days during the week.

The Sumac also provides resources and a meeting space for groups and individuals working to promote social justice, environmental awareness, peace, and animal rights.

We support community resistance projects in the form of Nottingham Anarchist Black Cross, Notts Solidarity Network and Notts Against Workfare, as well as being the home to Nottingham Animal Rights and Veggies Catering Campaign.

We are also a home for groups such as a sewing club, an abstinence group,  a community circle, and NG7 Women Together, a conversation and social group primarily for women for whom English isn’t their native language.

The space is sometimes used for music events, film showings and jumble sales in order to raise money and awareness.

We organise co-operatively, without managers or bosses, and all volunteers have a say in how the centre is run.  Open organising meetings are held on the first Monday of every month and operate by consensus.

An aim is to provide a space where local people can meet other socially conscious individuals in a relaxed and friendly environment.
