Book discussion: Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor
Short url:
Hurricane Season is Fernanda Melchor's first novel to be translated into English and in our June meeting we will discuss this together.
"The Witch is dead. And the discovery of her corpse—by a group of children playing near the irrigation canals—propels the whole village into an investigation of how and why this murder occurred. Rumors and suspicions spread. As the novel unfolds in a dazzling linguistic torrent, with each unreliable narrator lingering on new details, new acts of depravity or brutality, Melchor extracts some tiny shred of humanity from these characters that most would write off as utterly irredeemable, forming a lasting portrait of a damned Mexican village" (from Goodreads.com)
*It’s mentioned by a couple of the people who have wrote reviews on Goodreads that there are some parts of the novel too disturbing.
We will meet at 16:00 at the community kitchen De Peper (cash venue) located inside OT301 (http://www.ot301.nl). We’ll discuss the text for a couple of hours and then (for those who wish) enjoy a vegan meal (donation based). If you want to join for dinner you need to call on the same day to reserve (0684781156), or you can sign up at the bar while you’re there.
De Peper has a ramp and a large toilet.
