Cosmopolitan Readings: The God Of Small Things
Realizing the need to take a closer look at societies around the world that are too often overlooked by the mainstream media, we are reading the literature of countries around the world to gain a better understanding of their history, societies, ways of thinking, and political changes, as well as the struggles of people hoping to gain more rights and freedom.
"The God of Small Things" by Indian author Arundhati Roy is a story set in the Indian state of Kerala about the childhood experiences of fraternal twins whose lives are destroyed by the "Love Laws" that lay down "who should be loved, and how. And how much." From radical Marxist grandfathers to ghosts of moths, the varied lives of the characters are on full display--as is the realization that those lives can twist into new, ugly shapes, even cease forever.
This meeting will take the form of an informal guided discussion, and all are encouraged to join in.
