Whom Do Populists Really Represent? Turkey Under AKP Rule and the Question of Pluralism
#RethinkPopulism – Video Screening and Discussion with Sinem Adar and Ertuğ Tombuş
How can a leader claim to represent all people, when “the people” is not homogenous? And how can a populist leader stay in power, if disagreements arise between this leader and the people they govern?
Together with Blickwechsel Türkei and Off-University, MigrationMatters will present five episodes of their latest series #rethinkpopulism, featuring scholars Sinem Adar and Ertug Tombus speaking to the case of Turkey. The evening will examine the so-called life cycle of a populist and the relationship between populism, democracy, and social diversity by focusing on the case of Turkey.
The work of Adar and Tombus on nation-building, social inclusion/exclusion, and democratic theory lays the foundation for a rich discussion on what it means to be a leader “of the people.” We invite guests to discuss these issues with us – the scholars and Migration Matters team – following the screening.
