Infotalk: The Dutch state against Joke Kaviaar
In 2011, the state arrested Joke Kaviaar, activist in refugee solidarity
struggles, poet and writer. The prosecution accused her of incitement. The ‘crime’ consisted of writing articles in which she strongly criticizes the oppression and persecution of refugees, and called for resistance. The prosecution led to a conviction which stood up against appeal. It led to a two month conditional prison sentence. Because of another action, a protest in the municipal council hall against the building of a prison for refugee families on Kamp Zeist, the sentence became unconditional and was lengthened by two extra weeks for that action. This sentence will be
executed very shortly.
The Support Group 13 September, formed to organize solidarity against the prosecution of Joke Kaviaar, has made a book on the case. The book consists of the texts for which Joke Kaviaar was convicted, her declarations in court, a number of other articles written around the case, and messages of support. This is preceded by an overview of the case itself. The publication is meant to raise attention to the case, but also as a fund-raise occasion.
On the information meeting, people of the Support group will present the book, tell about the case, stress the need for solidarity and indicate how we can give that solidarity a concrete form.
The book itself is in Dutch; the presentation will be in English.
