 ilding stereotype-templates that they would endlessly reproduce as role mo
 dels for our society\, the Marx Brothers (Chico\, Harpo\, and Groucho) wer
 e dismantling those stereotypes and exposing them as jokes… especially aim
 ed at those in power. In this Marx Brothers flick we are thrown into the c
 razy world of politics today—where there are countless laws and regulation
 s for those at the bottom of society\, but those at the top can do whateve
 r the hell they want and get off scot-free. And of course\, when people li
 ve with such privilege and are totally disconnected from those at the bott
 om\, they begin hallucinating their own world without any sense of reality
  anymore. \n\n\nMany consider this to be the best of the Marx Brothers pro
 jects\, made in the early period when they were more wild\, rambunctious a
 nd unpredictable. The story is a bit scattered-brained but it involves Gro
 ucho Marx\, who through a twist of fate becomes the president of a bankrup
 t country called Freedonia. Once put into a position of power Groucho beco
 mes a cocky dictator-scoundrel who is totally unpredictable and makes new 
 laws at a whim. How the politics are carried out is hilarious\, but the pa
 rallels to things happening today are so acute that it's even a bit painfu
 l!\n\n\nAnd once again\, the reason why I am showing this at the Marionett
 e Theatre is because the physical skills that the three Marx Brothers reac
 h are a pure art form\, just like the art of puppetry.\n\n\nThe Marx Broth
 ers remain unique still after 90 years... their madness reached such a hig
 h-pitched surreal level\, and their one-liners packed a punch. Indeed afte
 r you have seen one of their flicks you feel like you have been in a boxin
 g match. The quality is zany\, even giddy\, but their real contribution is
  their wild imagination. The frantic speed is almost non-stop\, with littl
 e breaks of straight narrative\, allowing you catch your breath. This flic
 k has even had screenings at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:OPEN MONUMENT DAY Tribute to the Provadya Movement90 minutes of
  Psychedelic experimental music-shorts\n\n\nOnce a year there is an effort
  to open up local monument buildings for a day. These places are usually l
 ocked up either physically (with a padlock) or financially (with an expens
 ive ticket)\, but on this day they are open and free. This year they asked
  me to make a program at the historic Felix Meritis location on the Keizer
 sgracht.\n\n\nThe Felix Meritis building opened its doors in 1788 with the
  intent to combine art and science. In the 19th century it became a legend
 ary hall for classical music and in the 1950s it was the Communist party h
 eadquarters. In 1967 the Provadya counterculture was kickstarted there\, e
 vents which fused experimental music and cinema... ushering in a new era. 
 \n\n\nThe name Provadya was derived from combining the word 'pro' (Latin: 
 for) and 'vadja' (Hindi: music) = for the music. These events were like LS
 D trips\, but instead of retreating from reality by dropping out into fant
 asy\, they did the exact opposite—they flooded imagination into real life.
  Soon the Provadya spirit swept through the entire country spawning halluc
 inogenic bonfires everywhere.\n\n\nFor this evening we will collect togeth
 er a 90 minute program of avant-garde short movies all fused with eclectic
  music\, tapping into the psychedelic roots of the Provadya movement. It s
 eems like a perfect collaboration—after all\, isn't this what the undergro
 und cinemas are busy with—digging up forgotten or buried histories?\n\n\n
