Burn-out as a mirror for our society
"The very word “therapy” is obviously a misnomer if carried to its logical conclusion. Therapy assumes that someone is sick and that there is a cure, e.g., a personal solution. I am greatly offended that I or any other woman is thought to need therapy in the first place. Women are messed over, not messed up! We need to change the objective conditions, not adjust to them. What we discover then is that personal problems are political problems. There are no personal solutions at this time. There is only collective action for a collective solution." (C. Hanisch) It is very common in Mental Healthcare to see a depression, anxiety disorder or burn-out as the problem of the individual, with an individual treatment as the solution. But what do the burn-outs or anxiety disorders tell us aboutour society as a whole? Psychologist, Creative coach and Critical thinker Anne Mathot fromOngebaande Paden worked in the dutch Mental Healthcare for seven years and wants to share an alternative view on psychological “diseases”. Join us at the Barricade for this lecture! =================================================== The Barricade is a volunteer-run public library with a focus on anarchism and leftist politics. In our permanent collection, we have a variety of materials (books, journals, zines) on feminism, marxism, decolonialism, environmentalism, veganism, squatting and DIY culture. This collection consists of both classic and contemporary texts in English and Dutch. Becoming a member and borrowing books is free. We believe that self-education is a crucial element in the struggle for social change and therefore we aim to provide a space for collective learning. We organize discussions, reading groups and workshops that are free and open to anyone who is interested. We are open every Sunday from 4pm to 11pm. At 7pm vegan food is offered for donation by the Barriccoons Kitchen, an Utrecht-based anti-food waste collective inspired by raccoons.
