Rojava: resistance and self-administration in North Syria
Short url:
Surrounded by enemies including ISIS and the Turkish army, the people in North Syria (aka Rojava) have been carving out one of the most radically progressive societies on the planet.
North Syria was founded on, and is governed by, the principles of democratic confederalism: gender equality, multicultural plurality, self-defense, and sustainable ecology.
Since the declaration of autonomy, democratic confederalism has been employed by the Democratic Self-Administration, the collective name given to the region’s administrative apparatuses, to establish a bottom-up democratic system that represents all peoples living in North Syria.
North Syria has been at the forefront of the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State. Its male and female battalions successfully resisted in Kobane against overwhelming odds and continue to press forward in securing the region of North Syria from the jihadists.
In recent months, it has also been the target of attacks from the Turkish State, whose army has invaded the Afrin Region following a years long economic blockade, harassing fire, and the illegal construction of a border wall on North Syrian territory.
At the Barricade, we find it important to raise awareness on the situation in North Syria and want to use this Sunday as an occasion to talk about the realities of resistance and self-governance in the region.
We'll be joined for this event by two representatives of the Democratic Federation of North Syria to talk about this.
