Where to sleep this week? - A gathering on the lack of student housing and what to do next
Where to sleep this week?
A gathering on the lack of student housing and what to do next
September is the month in which all new students arrive to Utrecht and enter the housing-jungle of scammers, couch-surfing, temporary rooms without rights, aggravating "hospiteeravonden", and sky-rocketing deposits and rents. Some emerge unscathed, others are less lucky. Even if you have been warned, it is difficult to fully foresee the real impact of the shortage of 8575 student rooms until you are the one left homeless.
Being new to the city, it is easy to feel isolated and unable to deal with the situation. But dont dispare, you are not alone! During this evening we will explain the ins and outs of the Dutch housing crisis and share tools and strategies to fight it. Heard about the "2 persons max. per apartment" rule and you are unsure about what does that exactly mean? Do you have any doubts about what are your rights as a renter? What organizations are there to support you? How does your personal struggle intersect and relate to the broader housing crisis in the Netherlands?
Come by to share experiences, gather information, and create a network around the lack of student housing. We can help each other, and get to know groups of support. By creating a common space to discuss and act on this matter, we'll create opportunities to exercise our right to adequate places to stay and live - our right to housing.
The event will be in English, but whispered translation will be available.
After the event there will be dinner on donation provided by the Barricade, a volunteer-run collective inspired by raccoons and anarchism that organizes anti foodwaste meals, discussions and workshops every Sunday at the ACU.
