XII Porto Alegre Anarchist Bookfair - November 9 & 10, 2024

Our call to the fair is an open incitement to ideas and practices of insubordination to all forms of power and authority, that is, oppression and exploitation, as well as a stimulus to empathy with all that is alive, in a sincere search for equality within our differences. We seek to build a space for the dissemination of books, publications and other autonomous productions of an anarchist position, to fertilize, meet, expose ideas and achievements, debate, and promote anarchic initiatives and practices that foster the expansion of anarchism in action.

In the context of global disasters, the impositions of the capitalist machine deepen the exploitation of all life on Earth, leaving a trail of destruction and suffering. 2024 was the hottest year on the planet, burning with fever through industrial furnaces and fleets of engines, whose unsustainable pace will not cease even if it is disguised in green with the announced “transition of the energy matrix”. Capitalism, the states, authority itself, and the industrial technological system as a whole, are the very prison in which they torture us and devastate the planet. All reforms or pseudo-humanitarian actions only hide the need for their destruction.

Regionally, the year was marked by the revolt of the waters against the attacks of the techno-industrial society and the prompt response, shoulder to shoulder, of the people most affected. As the flood waters receded, the electoral campaigns of politicians flooded the cities with their empty promises and co-optation of struggles, reducing politics to voting.

The numbness of the people, as well as the blatant participation of false critics in the machine of domination, are made explicit by the lack of criticism of the event that maintains global capitalism: the G20 in Brazil. The desertion of the struggle and its burial at the ballot box demonstrates the urgency of independent, anarchic actions that do not seek false allies where there is only electoral, submissive party politics.

With the aim of breaking away from the normality that suffocates and drowns us, the Porto Alegre Anarchist Book Fair aims to focus on practices that are enemies of domination, inspiring possibilities for a life without masters on earth or in the skies. Anarchism, and everyone can recognize this, does not aim to dominate, govern, or engage in dialogue with oppressive forces, but rather to position itself intransigently against the imposed system.

Over the last two decades, anarchist book fairs have expanded as a tool for struggle and dissemination of ideas, demonstrating their vitality as a space for anti-authoritarian agitation around the world and, in this sense, we will once again raise this barricade, from the south of the continent, with the vigor of direct action, autonomy and vibrant solidarity in our lives and movements.

At the same time, for a decade now, solidarity tattoo events such as Solidariedade à Flor da Pele have been a way of self-managing anti-prison solidarity. Just like in the last Anarchist Book Fairs, we are taking this initiative forward once again, because we believe that marking our skin as an act of anarchist conviction and solidarity practice leaves much more on our bodies than just drawings or letters.

We therefore call on individuals and collectives to participate with proposals for activities, presentations, exhibitions, debates, book launches and anarchist publications, as well as exhibiting anti-authoritarian literature and autonomous productions, and combative music, but above all to come together to make us indomitable and not be accomplices of oppression, inequality, and devastation.
