Towards an interpretation of the Mabinogi part four
We meet one, two, three, times a year to discuss the medieval Welsh gem the Mabinogi.  It helps to have read the book but that is not essential as not all of us have..........it just helps.  For each session the tales are retold.

As before we will put a special emphasis on the fourth branch of the Mabinogi, Math son of Mathonwy.  We will revise what we have done before.  The birth and boyhood of Pryderi, the pig wars, the other world, charm and the nature of reality in the Mabinogi as revealed in the text.  Amongst other questions we will be asking ourselves 'Did Pryderi have to die?' 'What does an understanding of shamanism offer our understanding of the fourth branch?'.

In the fourth session we will try and get into the mind of the final adapter, previous adapters and the original audience.  What is the adapter trying to do and what is he hiding?

The sugested reading for this session.......read the fourth Mabinogi up untill the entry of Gronw Pebyr.  Then read the second branch 'Branwen' up untill the strange thing happens to the horses.

Those interested could meet for lunch at 1pm at Sharama on Radford Road at 1pm.
