Nations, Nationalism and Anti-Nationalist Politics: The Kurdish Freedom Movement and Beyond

Revolutionary politics has had a problem with nations and nationalism since the beginning. Whether it’s debates over ‘nationalisation’ and centralising state power, the question of support for ‘national liberation’ movements and ‘nationalism of the oppressed’, or how to understand people’s attachment to their ‘nationality’, a political critique of nations and nationalism is a central problem that the radical Left must face head on.

In this meeting Plan C members will introduce and facilitate an open political discussion on how to develop a critique of nations and nationalism that can be weaponised for an abolitionist anti-nationalist politics. Drawing particularly on lessons from the Kurdish freedom movement, and Abdullah Ocalan’s concepts of democratic autonomy, democratic confederalism, and ‘democratic nation’, we’ll discuss where nationalism comes from, how we understand nations, and how to organise within, against, and beyond the capitalist nation state.
