Reel News Night: GKN Florence
Short url:
Come and see films on the GKN factory occupation in Florence, which in July passed an incredible three years in permanent assembly - with practical discussion after on how to support them. What started out as a standard industrial dispute to save jobs has transformed into a visionary worker-led movement for just transition, with a reindustrialisation plan to move from producing parts for luxury cars, to solar panels and cargo bikes. All under workers' control, and for the benefit of the community, not for profit. Things are moving fast. The regional government now accepts that public intervention coould be possible to buy the factory off the current owners and hand it to the workers. The workers are producing prototypes of the cargo bikes which are being tested out in Italy and beyond to fit them to peoples' needs, and to hold mass meetings to work out what else needs to change and be fought for to make them part of a real transition to sustainable mobility. But most incredibly, nearly one million euros has been raised to start production via a peoples' shareholder scheme. Every individual or group who buys shares becomes part of the assembly that will collectively run the factory if the workers win. If they do win, it can create a blueprint from which we could start activating a just transition everywhere - as well as providing the hope of a positive future so crucial for stopping the growth of the far right. That's why a GKN factory occupation - uk solidarity network has been set up to raise the profile of the struggle and send a contingent of trade unionists and activists to the first international assembly in Florence on 1-13 October. Join us to discuss how we can help GKN workers win the most important struggle anywhere in Europe - as always, the event is free.
