Homelessness, Gentrification & Anarchy in the U.S.
Short url:
In the United States, cities are primarily geared towards consumption and profit. Gentrification has transformed US cities. Much of the low-cost housing in most major cities, and even smaller towns, have been demolished and replaced with luxury housing for investors. Because of a very limited social safety net, many people find themselves displaced, and some become homeless. Many anarchists in the US fight the system by feeding, working with, sheltering, and helping homeless people because, in some places in the US, it is illegal to do so. Mutual aid replaces charity efforts as homeless people often teach anarchists survival skills, new ways of embracing Solidarity and autonomy beyond abstract concepts or political points for politicians, and levels of care that are far beyond what "housies" might give. Some homeless people are even anarchists themselves.
You are invited to learn more about homelessness and anarchists in the United States and offer your thoughts, questions, and analysis about homelessness in Greece, Europe, or another place you have lived, so that we may find common cause between our various struggles.
The event is in English, with parallel translation into Greek.
