Banshees of Samhain Pt. 2 - The Babadook
Short url:
Our second feature was both written and directed by the Australian Jennifer Kent. The Babadook was released in 2014, and BBC filmcritic Mark Kermode named it his favorite film of the year. High praise from someone who feels very strongly about the horror genre in particular. Despite this acclaim, it was never released in the Netherlands.
The film follows a single mother struggling to deal with her problematic son after the traumatizing death of her husband. As the social and psycho-emotional pressures compound on her, a supernatural terror enters their life.
Kent avoided any computer-generated effects or post-production manipulations for her film. She exclusively used lighting and stop-motion in-camera effects to achieve the haunting presence of the Babadook, resulting in a final product that has the evocative uncannyness of old silent-movie era horror combined with the technical sophistication of contemporary film. A treat for fans of visual art as well as those who like genuinely spooky stories which have depth and meaning rather than simply trying to scare the audience.
