Info talk by Pepijn Brandon ‘Histories of slavery, capitalism and resistance: results of the Amsterdam research project’
This is the first in a series of info talks on black lives matter issues.

For more than 300 years, the city of Amsterdam was involved in slavery and slave trade through the West India Company (WIC) and the East India Company (VOC). What was the political and personal role of the rulers of Amsterdam? And what were the consequences for the development of Amsterdam and its inhabitants? Which effects had the choices of the rulers on the lives of the slaves in America, Africa and Asia? Should we re-evaluate the role of these companies and the notion of the ‘Golden Age’? And does the effects of the slave trade still resonate in the city today?

After the info talk the speaker will take questions.

Pepijn Brandon is assistant professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and senior researcher at the International Institute of Social History. His work focuses on the history of capitalism, war and economic development, and slavery.

Pepijn's new book is available at Het Fort van Sjakoo:
