Feminist Club Amsterdam -  Sunday Feminist Discussion: Feminism & Urbanism

Are cities conveying and facilitating women and minorities’ living experiences? Built environments often represent societal values, and because our world is patriarchal and sexist, therefore our cities are so. Historical works show that in the 19th century notably, women had been relegated to the “domestic sphere” where they would have to take care of the household and kids in Western societies (Federici, 2019). Their existence within cities was then limited as they could not be the “flâneur gentleman” nor the hardworking citizen as their place was indoors. On the other hand, working-class women that were obliged to work outside had to face daily danger between sexual aggressions and harassment. Throughout the world, most cities are hostile towards women, unpracticable and frightful. Women are made invisible (e.g. as they need to be cautious about where they go), whilst being “too visible” and vulnerable (e.g. fetishisation of their bodies in the public space). In this Sunday’s discussion, located in Amsterdam city, we wish to bring upon lived experiences and your views on the topic. What actions can we take? Of course you can also bring your own questions to the discussion!

If you would like to join, please read the following code of conduct and sign up!

There will be a donation jar and some refreshments available (cash or pin). Please think about donating something if you are able; a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends, who know of the importance of places like this, which exist alternative to an individualistic society, capitalist economy and gentrifying neighborhoods

NieuwLand is wheelchair accessible but the toilets are not
The nearest public spaces with larger toilets are Tropen Museum (open Tuesday-Saturday 10-17) and hotel The Manor (open 24/7)

We are looking forward to seeing you
Everyone is welcome
