Eens per maand screent NieuwLand een documentaire over activisme. Deze maand: Waar de ratten koning zijn! Een film van Barbara den Uyl (1985)

Rond de 80s de Staatsliedenbuurt in Amsterdam wordt een soort vrijstaat waar krakers, punks en de oorspronkelijke bewoners de overhand hebben. Het gezag van de gemeenteraad is bijna tot nul teruggebracht sinds burgemeester Ed van Thijn in 1984 de wijk moest verlaten. Barbara den Uyl, die zelf in het gebied woont, volgde de strijd van de bewoners tegen het systeem gedurende meer dan een jaar. Een strijd die niet beperkt is tot huisvestingsproblemen, maar die betrekking heeft op zo uiteenlopende onderwerpen als neonazi's, gevangenen en de paus.

In the 80s the Staatsliedenbuurt in Amsterdam was a kind of free state where squatters, punks and the original residents rule the roost. The city council’s authority has been reduced almost to zero since mayor Ed van Thijn was forced to leave the neighborhood in 1984.
