Rebel Cinema: "How to Survive a Plague" (2012)
Short url:
Join us on World AIDS Day, for a story of people who refused to die without a fight.
In the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, it wasn't just the HIV virus that was ravaging a generation: it was the indifference of the general public, discrimination of public institutions and the profiteering of the pharmaceutical industry.
United in anger and driven by urgency, the direct action group ACT UP was formed in this context, by a group of HIV+ patients, their lovers and friends who decided to take their destiny into their own hands.
They had nobody to trust but their collective struggle. They did not care if their actions would shock the public. They targeted powerful vested interests and won, and changed the course of the pandemic.
Meticulously assembled from 700 hours of archival footage shot by the activists themselves, this monumental documentary is not only of queer-historical interest, but a blueprint for unleashing power to heal a sick planet.
