NETWORKING COURSE - OSI MODEL - NO KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

NETWORKS GOVERN ALMOST EVERYTHING YOU DO ON YOUR PHONE AND COMPUTER, THEY ARE USED TO TRANSMIT ALL KINDS OF DATA, FROM MAKING A PHONE CALL, TO CHECKING YOUR EMAILS, TO YOUR GOVERNMENT SPYING ON YOU, EVERYTHING RELIES ON NETWORKS. AS THEY ARE SO UBIQUITOUS STANDARDS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND THIS COURSE AIMS TO FOCUS ON THE MOST COMMON STANDARD USED.

OSI MODEL IS A STANDARD MODEL TO UNDERSTAND HOW NETWORKS WORK. IT IS BROKEN DOWN INTO 7 LAYERS, STARTING WITH THE PHYSICAL MEDIUM THE DATA IS TRANSFERED ACROSS AND GRADUALLY GOING UP TO THE FRAMEWORK THE BROWSER USES TO TRANSLATE THE DATA TO THE PICTURE OF A CAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT NOW.

THIS COURSE AIMS TO BREAK DOWN THE OSI MODEL AND TEACH IT IN SIMPLE STAGES WITH A LECTURE ON EACH AREA FOLLOWED BY A PRACTICAL WORKSHOP, TO APPLY WHAT HAS BEEN TAUGHT.

LAYER 1 IS THE PHYSICAL MEDIUM USED TO TRANSFER THE DATA, SO THE FIRST WEEK WILL COVER ETHERNET(COPPER/TWISTED PAIR/CAT5/CAT6). WE WILL DISCUSS HOW TO CABLE AN AREA AS WELL AS COVER SOME TECHNICAL ASPECTS AND STANDARDS OF THE MEDIUM AND IT'S VARIANTS.
THE WORKSHOP WILL INVOLVE TERMINATING CABLES, SO IF YOU HAVE YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT PLEASE BRING IT ALONG, THOUGH EQUIPMENT WILL BE PROVIDED IT IS BETTER TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO USE YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT. SO PLEASE COME WITH ANY CABLE TERMINATION AND TESTING TOOLS YOU HAVE.

ALSO PLEASE BRING A LAPTOP EVERY WEEK AS MOST OF THE LABS WILL REQUIRE IT.

THE SECOND WEEK WE WILL STILL BE ON LAYER 1 BUT WILL BE MOVING ONTO WiFi

IF ANYONE HAS SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE ON A PARTICULAR AREA AND WOULD LIKE TO RUN THE COURSE ON THAT PARTICULAR WEEK THEN PLEASE SPEAK TO ME DURING THE WORKSHOP AND WE WILL ARRANGE IT.
