A tragic tale of the planet Earth in despair in the near future. Natural food like fruits, vegetables and meat among others are now almost extinct. Strawberries run at $150 for a glass of them. Earth is overpopulated and New York City is bursting with starving, poverty stricken people and is outrageously polluted. The world is on fire. The greenhouse effect has risen the temperature into nearly unbearable levels, and people are kept in the cities by law. The ultra-rich live in separated luxury apartments, but also experience the lack of natural food. New York City's infrastructure has broken down, and riot police are everywhere to control the masses. Water is rationed and most of the population live on mass-produced processed food rations called soylent green, made from ocean vegetation and formed into bland, tasteless green wafers. For some people the situation is too much, so there are government assisted suicide (euthanasia) programs. One day Police Detective Thorn (Charlton Heston) is brought in to investigate a strange and brutal murder case involving an official from the Soylent corporation. The murder case becomes only more mysterious as more of the clues are uncovered.

This movie paints a very bleak future for planet Earth, but one which seems to be coming more true everyday. Of all the sci-fi films that were made in the 70s and 80s, this is one of the most original and certainly one of the best, along with turning out to be one of the most accurate (whether it is predicting the huge wealth gap, the artificial crap we call food today, the social unrest across the planet, to the haywire climate shifts). Also starring the great Edward G. Robinson in his final role before he died, giving a tragic, poignant performance. This flick has great acting all around, a wonderful script and a fantastic music score.
