DIG! * 2004 * Directed by Ondi Timoner * 107 minutes * In English

DIG! is a documentary about the world of rock and roll... and the two schizophrenic sides of it. In other words, one side is about talent, and the other side is business. The woman who directed this flick spent 7 years filming the progression of two bands from the West coast in America. One band, The Dandy Warhols are an OK band who are willing to compromise and sell themselves, and therefore are able to achieve success. The other band The Brian Jonestown Massacre is headed by a guy named Anton Newscombe, who everybody considers a genius but who is unable to deal with the real business world. In a sense, Anton's band ends up sabotaging their own success through drugs, alcohol and general insanity. And despite their brilliance, no larger record company will touch them, and they remain unrecognized.

While tens of thousands of fans in Germany and the UK sing along to every word at sold-out festivals headlined by the Dandies, Newscombe leads his band (BJM) in a nine-hour set in a dingy club for an audience of ten. Whether you know either of the bands doesn't matter at all... in the end, this is actually a one-of-a-kind documentary about the modern world and how the culture industry works in the age of mass-marketing.
