Herzog double: La Soufriere + The Great Ecstasy of Sculptor Steiner
LA SOUFRIERE 1977 (La Soufrière - Warten auf eine unausweichliche Katastrophe) Directed by Werner Herzog 30 minutes With English subtitles
In 1976 Werner Herzog hears a report that the volcano called La Soufrière will erupt on the French Caribbean island of Guadaloupe, and that the capital port city of Basse-Terre has been completely evacuated. He runs there with a small crew to record the oncoming disaster and talk with the few people who refuse to leave. Herzog risks his life (along with his crew) in order to make this film. The result is a work of stark beauty, a meditation on death and loneliness.
THE GREAT ECSTASY OF THE SCULPTOR STEINER 1974 (Die große Ekstase des Bildschnitzers Steiner) Directed by Werner Herzog 45 minutes In German with English subtitles
What would have been a mundane sports film in the hands of any other director, is transformed into pure poetry by Werner Herzog. Images of the sculptor Steiner shooting off the ski ramp, slowed down to 1/20th of the normal speed, flying through the air, set to the transcendental music of Popol Vuh.
