Latcho Drom
Short url:
LATCHO DROM 1993 Directed by Tony Gatlif 103 minutes In various languages with English subtitles
Tony Gatlif's amazing visual and aural masterpiece takes you on a journey westward, from North-West India to Spain, with haunting stops along the way to reveal the nomadic nature of Gypsy culture through its music. The journey takes place over a year's time, lingering with each season. Only a slight narrative weaves the film together, but at heart its real story is told through the astounding music, the poetic lyrics and amazing dances that are documented. Full of haunting images and music, this is a film that will open up both your mind and heart. It maps, along the way, both the joy and sorrow (and persecution) of the Roma Gypsy existence.
Both simple, and incredibly moving, this film features one of the best soundtracks ever made for cinema. All without a big budget... in fact it was made with very little money, shot while traveling on the road with real Gypsies. Both sensual and melancholy, but above all magical. This is the kind of film that brings us back to real life.
We are in the dead of winter, so let's go on an illuminating cinematic journey across Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, France and Spain in this visually and musically stunning film. This is another very rare screening of a film with an incredible reputation that has become a cult favorite.
