DIVA   1981 Directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix 111 minutes In French with English subtitles

This is the film that changed the look of French cinema, and that made opera music hip again by mixing it with black leather jackets, thugs, motorcycles, lush music, a twisting plot and gorgeous visuals. This is a modern film noir set in Paris that combines high art with low art to create a very peculiar and intoxicating suspense. Directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix (Betty Blue), it had a big influence on directors like Leos Carax (The Lovers of Pont-Neuf, Holy Motors), Jeunet and War Kong-Wai to name a few. This was a film that started a whole new way to visualize cinema... and became the cult film of a generation.

Set in a stunning contemporary Paris where the fantastic and the real world clash, Beineix' Diva is a thriller, fairy-tale, action flick and romantic drama all rolled into one movie. And beyond that, it has a beautiful pop-art visual style that splashes rich colors across the screen, along with a legendary music soundtrack with opera singer Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez in her only film role to date. Pure cinematic dynamite.

This will be a high-definition screening.
