THE END OF AUGUST AT THE HOTEL OZONE   1967 (Konec srpna v Hotelu Ozon) Directed by Jan Schmidt 77 minutes
In Czech with English subtitles

Many years after a nuclear war, we come upon a band of savage young women led by an elderly lady who appears to be wise in the ways of the world, both the old and the new. This group live off rusting tins of food, and they scour the wild Czechoslovakian countryside searching for anything else they can possibly eat... starved hunters who stalk the desolate landscape killing any animals they come across. They are also hunting for men who they can get impregnated by in order to procreate. It will be an interesting reversal of gender roles, since this screening will be in the bowels of the red-light district!

The script was written by Czechoslovakian New Wave filmmaker Pavel Juracek. Shot in a dusky black and white, this film has a brilliant end-of-the-world mood to it. It has been described as "MAD MAX directed by Andrei Tarkovsky" and this film is indeed a searing and haunting vision of the future. And once again, like so many great films, it has been totally deleted from film history and is absolutely NEVER screened. An apocalyptic sci-fi film on the road to extinction.
