This dystopian sci-fi comedy is set 500 years in the future, where a simple US army librarian wakes up to find commercialism has exploded and anti-intellectualism prevails, while justice, human rights, and social responsibility have been squandered by it’s mindlessly hedonic populace. Released during and no doubt inspired by George Bush’s presidency, many have called this film prescient of our neoliberal present where crass billionaires run the world, corporations have their brand on every aspect of public and private life, and gargantuan entertainment monopolies try to record and influence our every thought.
