Un Homme Qui Dort (The Man Who Sleeps)

Bernard Queysanne | 1974 | France | 77’ | EN subs

A 25-year-old student stops going to class, ignores the messages from his friends and becomes someone that does little more than breathing within the four gray walls of his room or endlessly walking in the city of Paris. This is a portrait of indifference, tediousness and the nothingness that is left when the charm of surprise and imagination are gone. We follow the haunting images of a life moved by inertia while we listen to a second-person stream-of-consciousness that confronts the young man with the impossibility of becoming a vegetative being: desire and guilt never vanish completely. This is a very precious and sincere film that unpretentiously collects the insights of French existentialism. Un homme qui dort is the film adaptation of the homonymous novel written by Georges Perec.
