THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH   1989 Directed by Hal Hartley 107 minutes In English

Hal Hartley's films are witty, inventive and totally unique in modern cinema. The Unbelievable Truth, like most of his early films, is a study of crazy relationships. This edgy but meditative comedy is Hartley's debut feature, and like many of the films he made after, it remains difficult to see... almost forgotten in film history. But there was a time when this single film had a huge impact on filmmakers, and it was responsible for kicking off a entire independent film movement. David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch are well known, but for many people today Hal Hartley remains to be discovered. He was just as innovative and enthralling as the best of them, with a sharp sense for off-beat humor.

Gloomy redheaded Audrey (the dynamite Adrienne Shelly - Trust, Waitress) is a girl who is convinced the world will soon blow itself up through nuclear war. She is engaged to be married with her high school boyfriend, but she instead becomes interested in a man of mystery, a black-clad mechanic with multiple murder convictions in his dangerous past. When he arrives in town fresh out of prison, many of the townspeople whisper about how many people he might have killed, and the stories get wilder every time they're told. He is a loner who is uncomfortable with relationships... but is forced to come to grips with love and responsibility when Audrey falls for him.

This is a film about the necessity of trusting one's instincts in a world of hypocrisy and rumors... all done in Hartley's unique surrealistic style. It's certainly one of his early masterpieces. Great soundtrack too ... also done by the director himself under his alias of Ned Rifle.

This will be a high-definition screening.
