Rolf de Heer & Peter Djigirr | 2006 | Australia | 90' | NL subs | 35mm

Set in the distant tribal past, Dayindi covets one of the wives of his older brother. To teach him the proper way, he is told a story from the mythical past, a story of wrong love, kidnapping, sorcery, bungling mayhem and revenge gone wrong.

Shot collaboratively with actors indigenous to Arnhem Land, and voiced in their traditional Ganalbingu language, the film offers unique anthropological accuracy. The use of risque jokes and playful storytelling keep the story relatable, deftly avoiding the often problematic representation of indigenous people as ‘noble savages’.

Rolf de Heer is a renowned Dutch-Australian director. Ten Canoes was the winner of the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize at Cannes in 2006.

On the 13th of June we will screen Ten Canoes with English subtitles.
