The Pervert's Guide to Ideology

Short url:

Sophie Fiennes | 2012 | UK/Ireland | 134'

Philosopher Slavoj Zizek and filmmaker Sophie Fiennes team up to uncover the ideologies buried within classic cinema. Unique to the documentary’s approach, and to often hilarious effect, is the playful way Zizek appears within the films themselves. These cinematic examples are used to show the continuing role that these collective fantasies play in shaping the beliefs and practices in society more broadly. For instance, what fascist political dimensions lie hidden in The Sound of Music? Is it, counter to its literal plot, actually a tribute to fascist thinking? Taxi Driver, Zabriskie Point, The Searchers, Batman, They Live, Titanic, and propaganda films from Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia all feature in Zizek’s stimulating, provocative and always entertaining critical analysis.
