Leilah Weinraub | 2018 | USA | 72'

Shakedown was an underground lesbian strip club founded by and for black women in Los Angeles. While dancing to pulsating hip-hop beats, with go-go dance and strip shows, it was a central point for the city’s lesbian club scene. By showing the protagonists backstage and in interviews, this intimate chronicle reveals that Shakedown was more than just a strip club; it brought together and galvanised a community of freaks and queers of colour, against the adversity from reprisals by the local police. Being a member of the community herself, Leilah Weinraub offers a celebration of female desire that has rarely been seen on the big screen.
