Tromeo and Juliet
Short url:
TROMEO AND JULIET 1996 Directed by Lloyd Kaufman 107 minutes In English
This is Lloyd Kaufman's cult classic adaptation of Shakespeare's legendary play about "star crossed" lovers, impregnated with extreme amounts of Troma-esque nudity and black humor, and updated to 1990s New York City. Told in a totally outlandish style, this film attempts to impact the viewer in the same way theatre-goers were affected in Shakespeare's time... and as we all know, many critics actually suspect that the original play was in fact a sarcastic black comedy. We also all know that most adaptions of this tragic tale suspiciously miss out on the erotic side of the story... well, not in this version!
As is normal with these ultra-low budget Troma films, the acting sucks - with very few exceptions - but that's part of their charm. Described as "Shakespeare on acid" or as "Shakespeare turned inside out", this film contains violence, profanity, drug use, body piercing and sex, all with a big dose of bizarreness. It has a "kick-ass soundtrack" which includes Motorhead, Sublime and The Westley Willis Fiasco. And of course we will be screening the uncensored director's cut.
One viewer's response: "If watered-down, over-directed, big-budget, Hollywood, Garbage is what you've been programmed to go for, then by all means, go for it, but if you're in the mood for something a little more colorful, something that really packs a punch, and doesn't follow the "normal" movie pattern, and if you happen to have a rather abnormal sense of humor, then you just might not hate this movie. Tromeo and Juliet gives the finger to all that is mainstream. Full-blast exploitation with as much mean-spirited humor as anything from a young John Waters."
This will be a high-definition screening.
