Cavia invites you to our Women’s Day screening! We’re screening two films that portrait the resilience and bravery of women, as they try to overcome the constraints of their societies.

LA MUÑECA FEA
Claudia Lopez & George Reyes | 2016 | Mexico | 88' | ENG subs

We will first show La Muñeca Fea: a documentary about a group of elderly (and still working) sex workers in Mexico City ranging in age from sixty to ninety-five who seek peace and find community behind the walls of Casa Xochiquetzal, a refuge named after the Aztec goddess of beauty and love. Established by one of their former colleagues, the family created within the walls of this shelter struggles to stay together despite the pressures that develop from within and outside the home. La Muñeca Fea is a moving documentary that offers a rare perspective on the situation of elderly sexworkers, and give them a voice.

After a break, get ready to be blown away by our surprise screening. This film is one of the most powerful and piercing portrayals of a woman in film history and a remarkable feat of early cinema. A woman who is vulnerable and cornered by the most powerful emerges triumphant and gracious despite her defeat. You haven’t seen anything, if you haven’t seen this — and that is not an exaggeration.
