Mehmet Kara, a young Turk from the town of Tire in Izmir, has recently moved to Istanbul and works at the city's water maintenance company. He has a girlfriend, Arzu, who works at a laundry. Due to a misunderstanding, he is arrested by the police, being mistaken as a Kurdish suspect. After being brutally beaten, he is released, but within days he loses his apartment, his job, and eventually Arzu. When his Kurdish friend Berzan dies of a brain hemorrhage following clashes with the police during a protest demonstration, Mehmet decides to embark on a long journey to bring the body to his friend's home town, near the border with Iraq. It is on this journey where he learns the situation of the Kurdish people in the east of the country.
