Jacquot de Nantes
Short url:
JACQUOT DE NANTES 1991 Directed by Agnès Varda 118 minutes In French with English subtitles
The visionary French filmmaker Agnès Varda (Cleo from 5 to 9, Vagabond) was married for life to another celebrated filmmaker named Jacques Demy. He was just as much a visionary, creating such groundbreaking films such as Lola and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Shortly before her husband's death, Varda put together this tribute to him by making a film where she re-created his childhood. She went back to the exact house where he had grown up and shot this film, which intertwines the events of his childhood during WWII and his growing dream to become a filmmaker. The story of his childhood is intercut with intimate home movie footage, along with autobiographical clips from some of his films that reflect upon his story.
Jacques Demy and Agnès Varda made this movie together on Demy's deathbed. He provided her with stories from his childhood, and she wrote the manuscript and visualized the film. The end product of this collaboration isn't heavy-handed or pretentious - instead it's light, reflective, inventive and bittersweet. This will be a rare screening of this magical film that illustrates how memories can keep the past alive.
This will be a high-definition screening.
