The Double Life of Veronique
Short url:
THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE
(La double vie de Véronique) 1991
Directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski
98 minutes
In French and Polish with English subtitles
This film was Krzysztof Kieślowski’s first French film, and his international breakthrough. It remains one of his most beloved films, and while many feel it to be the director's best film, others go as far as hailing it as the best film of the entire 90s by any director.) It's a ravishing, mysterious rumination on identity, love, and the need for human intuition. The cinematography alone is heartbreaking... composed of autumn colors, beautiful oranges and golds.
Female lead Irène Jacob is incandescent as both Weronika, a Polish choir soprano, and her double, Véronique, a French music teacher. Though unknown to each other, the two women share an enigmatic, emotional connection which Kieślowski details in gorgeous reflections and movements. Its shimmering cinematography is fused with Zbigniew Preisner’s haunting, operatic music score, creating one of cinema’s most purely metaphysical works. A real gem that needs to be experienced in a cinema.
"Actor and director are symbiotic, relying on hazy, autumnal ambiance and mood for narrative, utilizing a subtle minimalist approach to dialogue. This is fine art, unlike heavy-handed Hollywood productions. The tone is consistently ambiguous -- emotionally resonant, to be sure, but beyond a vaguely somber, wistful undercurrent, the movie allows the viewer to fill the "empty space" with his or her own thoughts and feelings. It's a true testament to Kieslowski's mastery, and few films are ever so transcendentally sublime."
This will be a high-definition projection.
