Jane Campion, 1989, Australia, 97'

Debut film by New-Zealand director and first (and until now only!) female winner of the Palm d’Or Jane Campion, who is known for The Piano and the recent tv-series Top of the Lake. The film tells the story of the quiet Kay and her emotionally unstable sister Sweetie. The film has everything (and more) of what would make Campion’s later work so beloved: complex female characters, problematic family ties, a realistic portrayal of the working class and above all a mystical and almost magical atmosphere.
