Jennie Livingston, US, 1990

Jennie Livingston's iconic documentary offers an intimate portrait of the Harlem drag balls in the late 1980s, where rival fashion 'houses' compete for trophies and cash prizes in categories such as 'face', 'femme queen realness' and 'voguing'. Paris is Burning celebrates how one group of New Yorkers, for whom racism, homophobia, transphobia, poverty and AIDS were all too real, created a world of sustenance and joy.
