Ciné Interzone: Day of Wrath
Short url:
DAY OF WRATH 1943
(Vredens Dag)
Directed by Carl Dreyer
110 minutes
In Danish with English subtitles
This is one of the most spellbinding and spine-tingling movies made by the visionary Danish director Carl Dreyer (The Passion of Jean D'Arc, Vampyr). Although some of his films are pushed into the horror genre, none of his movies actually belong there, they are more otherworldly than anything. This one is a real beauty, and focuses on persecution of witches in the 17th century (and is often seen as an allegory of the Nazi occupation of Denmark).
Day of Wrath is about Anne, the young wife of an elderly priest, who is trying to unravel the bizarre world around her. When she falls in love with the priest's son things become tense, as accusations are thrown about... all set against a background of witch-hunting. In some ways it's terrifying, in other ways it's poetic and piercing. A haunting film, lit like a painting, with such quality that it's absolutely mind-boggling. This diamond-like aesthetic would later influence directors as diverse as Ingmar Bergman, Antonioni, Godard and Lars von Trier. Another very rare screening of a disappearing masterpiece.
This will be a high-definition projection.
