FCA Book Club - Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers’ Rights by Molly Smith and Juno Mac
Short url:
In this session we will read and discuss Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers’ Rights by Molly Smith and Juno Mac.
According to the poll we did online this was another sex-work related book that was highly recommended.
On goodreads you can find the following short description of the book: You hear that selling sex is degrading; you hear that no one would ever choose to do it; you hear that it's dangerous; that women get abused and killed. You often hear, "There should be a law against it!" Or, perhaps just against the buyers. What do sex workers want? That's not something you hear asked very often. In this accessible manifesto, the strong argument for full decriminalization of sex work is explored through experience and looking at laws around the world. In some places, like New York, selling sex is illegal. In others, like Sweden, only buying it is. In some, like the UK and France, it's legal to sell sex and to buy it, but not to run a brothel or solicit a sale. In New Zealand, it's not illegal at all. In What Do Sex Workers Want?, Juno Mac and Molly Smith - both sex workers - explain what each of these laws do in practice to those doing the work. Addressing each model in turn, they show that prohibiting the sex industry actually exacerbates every harm that sex workers are vulnerable to.
We'll meet in NieuwLand on Sunday 15th September at 16:30
There will be a donation jar and some refreshments available (cash or pin). Please think about donating something if you are able; a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends, who know of the importance of places like this, which exist alternative to an individualistic society, capitalist economy and gentrifying neighbourhoods.
To learn more about NieuwLand visit their website (https://nieuwland.cc).
NieuwLand is wheelchair accessible but the toilets are not. The nearest public spaces with larger toilets are Wereld Museum Amsterdam (open Tuesday-Saturday 10-17) and hotel The Manor (open 24/7) If you have access needs regarding the event that you feel may not be in place please get in contact with us so that we can do our best to incorporate these (feministbookclubamsterdam@gmail.com).
If you want to attend the session but find it difficult to get hold of the book reach out to us.
Like the FCA more generally we aim to be a harassment free space for everybody. If you are new to our meetings, or feel you need a refresher please read our code of conduct to find out what behaviours we hope for from you, and hold ourselves to in our sessions (http://www.thefeministclub.nl/coc)
We are looking forward to seeing and discussing with you!
