Abortion and Feminism
Short url:
We are meeting at Atria, Vijzelstraat 20.
In partnership with the European Student Think Tank, an international NGO run by students for students, this discussion night will be focused upon the abortions right movement and planning activism within this area, following our successful discussion night last year on abortion and feminism. This event has been organised as part of the EST's gender equality campaign 'Empow(h)er'.
The night will be composed of presentations from organisations such as Women on Web, as well as give attendees the chance to share their own ideas and experiences. We wish to focus this event primarily on discussing tactics and planning future activism so that we can continue to be a positive and feminist presence in the abortion rights movement.
We will be including a non-mandatory entrance fee of €3 to act as a donation for pro-choice organisations, but this is of course not an obligation!
To find out more about the European Student Think Tank and their Empow(h)er campaign, please visit www.europeanstudentthinktank.com.
If you wish to get in contact with the EST representative who is helping to organise the event, Beki, please email her at est.netherlands@gmail.com. She will be happy to answer any questions or give any information.
We look forward to seeing you there!
As preparation for the night, we kindly ask you to read the sources below:
'Abortion is more than a single issue', Katie O. on Shout Out Jmu: https://shoutoutjmu.com/2012/01/22/abortion-is-more-than-a-single-issue/
- A post on a feminist blog that gives a nice summary on the intersectional elements of abortion, and how it is not a 'single issue.' It talks about race, class and human rights.
'Can #ShortYourAbortion turn hashtag activism in a movement?', Vauhini Vara, The New Yorker: http://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/can-shoutyourabortion-turn-hasht...
- A piece about the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion and how the organiser is trying to turn the hashtag into an offline social movement. It poses thoughtful questions on digital/hashtag activism and whether it is fleeting, but also touches upon privilege in the abortion rights movement related to class and race. I found this a particularly interesting case study!
'What its like to be a pro-choice activist in an anti-abortion state', Rebecca Grant, Glamour: http://www.glamour.com/story/what-its-like-to-be-a-pro-choice-activist-i...
- This article talks about the challenges and barriers that pro-choice activists face in anti-abortion states in the US.
