Climate change is endangering all life on earth and is no longer a problem that lies in the future. If we want to resist the most fatal impacts of climate change we need to cut off the consumption of oil, coal and gas. The urgency for change makes us from Code Rood believe that we need to switch from public mass protest to mass civil disobedience. Only if we join forces and dare to take climate resistance to the next level we can cut of the power of the fuel industry and create a sustainable fossil free future for us humans. That’s why on the 24th of June, CODE ROOD together with other concerned citizens will perform a civil disobedience action in the harbor of Amsterdam- Europe’s biggest gasoline and second biggest coal harbor, with the ambition to close the ports for the biggest environmental polluters and to push forward for sustainability.

But what does civil disobedience during a climate action actually entail and look like? What are concrete reasons for its legitimacy? We will screen the documentary Disobediance, a film about civil disobedience linked to climate action on a global scale. Afterwards we will give a short presentation on our Code Rood action and have a Q&A.

Klimaatverandering is een gevaar voor al het leven op onze planeet en niet meer alleen een probleem voor de toekomst. Als wij klimaatverandering tegen willen houden moeten wij zo snel mogelijk stoppen met het gebruik van olie, kolen en gas. Omdat de situatie onderhand zo dringend en bedreigend is, zien wij van Code Rood het als noodzakelijk en gerechtvaardigd om over te gaan van grootschalig publiek protest naar grootschalige burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid. Alleen wanneer wij de handen ineenslaan, alleen wanneer wij een stap verder durven gaan, kan de macht van de fossiele brandstoffenindustrie doorbroken worden en een fossielvrije samenleving bereikt worden. Daarom zullen wij van Code Rood samen met andere bezorgde burgers op 24 juni burgerlijk ongehoorzaam zijn in de haven van Amsterdam – Europa's grootste benzinehaven en één-na-grootste kolenhaven – om samen te eisen dat Amsterdam haar poorten sluit voor de grote vervuilers en voorop gaat lopen in de transitie naar een duurzame samenleving.

Maar wat houdt burgerlijk ongehoorzaamheid tijdens een klimaatactie eigenlijk in? Wat zijn de reden om deze ‘radicale’ stap te nemen? Wij kijken naar ervaringen uit het verleden en tonen de documentaire Disobedience, een film over burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid in het kader van klimaatacties op een wereldwijde schaal. We zullen daarna een korte presentatie geven over de Code Rood actie en er zal een Q&A zijn.
